I've always been interested in music. My great-uncle,
Hershel Calbert, played stand up base for Hank Williams Sr. in Las Vegas
for a time. Also, he, my grandfather Raymon (5 string banjo), and
their brother Frank (fiddle) traveled and played original music
throughout the Southern states. Their father, Cheatem Calbert, was
a fiddle player and a bootlegger during the depression. My only
uncle from the Calbert side, Bobby and his son Michael, both play guitar
in recreation but love jam bands and frequent the scene.
My father went outlaw country with Willy, Waylon and the
Boys when I was 8 years old and gave me his Beatles, Buddy Holly, and
other assorted rock albums...and my journey began. My father
played a little guitar when I was small (Ramon's influence) so, at about
age 13, I got my first 6-string. It was a Harmony with exploded
cherry finish and I've had one ever since. I learned to play drums
over the last four years and truly love it. I wouldn't have done
it if I couldn't sing and drum at the same time. It all came
together nicely. I love playing in the band! We communicate
very well musically, we all have similar views on music, and we all love
The Dead. What more can I say......
